Email list hygiene is the ongoing work of keeping contact data accurate, expected and usable. Verification is one component. The stronger process begins when an address is collected and continues through consent records, engagement, bounce handling and suppression.
At collection
Validate structure and risk in real time, explain why the address is being requested and record the source and time of consent where applicable. Avoid “fixing” an address invisibly: a suggestion should be shown to the user for confirmation.
Before a campaign
Verify older or imported segments, remove hard bounces and respect every prior opt-out. Separate catch-all and role-based addresses when their risk profile differs from normal contacts. Test a representative sample before committing a large send.
After sending
Feed hard bounces and complaints into a durable suppression process. A future import should not reactivate an address that previously opted out or repeatedly failed. Keep delivery signals separate from engagement; an address can be technically deliverable and still be unwanted or inactive.
A sensible schedule
There is no universal interval. Data collected continuously can be protected at entry. Older databases should be reviewed before use, and frequently mailed lists can use recent bounce and complaint signals. The correct schedule follows the age, source, send frequency and business risk of the data.
